UCC Board of Directors Update
Julia Gaughan began serving as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Setting of the UCC following the close of the General Synod in 2019. Her first Board meeting was in October 2019. As a member of the UCC National Board, Julia also serves as member of KO Conference Council
As with all things 2020, work on the Board of Directors for the National Setting of the United Church of Christ has been . . . interesting.
Typically, the Board meets in person twice a year, in March and in October. Moving our March Board meeting to a virtual gathering was actually one of the first changes made in response to the COVID-19 pandemic that I experienced. That switch was the first one in a long line of switches and cancellations that marked late winter/early spring 2020 for me. One of the fortunate aspects of this, though, is that because the national Board is composed of people from all around the country, we are used to meeting by zoom for committee meetings and called meetings. We just now are doing all of the meetings that way until we can safely be together again.
And meet we have! WIth COVID-19 and social unrest due to the centuries of injustice and oppression, there’s been so much to do to support our congregations and members and partners at a number of levels:
We made the decision to go virtual with General Synod in 2021.
The National Setting has been offering webinars at least twice a week for months now via Tuesdays for Nurture and Thursdays for the Soul. These webinars, and more, can all be viewed for free on YouTube in the event you miss the live event.
We’ve requested proposals for outside consulting to evaluate our racial diversity, equity, and inclusion practices as a body.
We continue to assess and evaluate our progress in line with our strategic vision and mission priorities.

It can be daunting at times to think of all that there is to do to bring God’s peace and justice to life. And it can be inspiring and fulfilling to know we are in this work together, in community following in Christ’s steps to unite in God’s love for a just world for all.
