Find Time for Renewal

Written by the Rev. Kayla Bonewell

The theme for the next handful of KO reflections is “RENEWAL,” so here’s what I know: I would have burned out a long time ago had a wise pastor not pulled me aside during my first few months in ministry and told me to schedule two days off in a row, and make sure that everyone at church knows when my sabbath is.  It’s printed in the bulletin, on the church calendar, and on my email signature and voicemail. Sometimes these days get interrupted with funerals or emergencies, but this not the norm.

My 5 work-days (Wed-Sun) are full and robust. I enjoy the rhythm and flow.  But today I want to share about my ”weekends:” my 2 days off (Mon-Tues).

I sleep in.

I take naps.

I go on walks.

I read for fun.

I repot plants.

I eat ice-cream.

I watch movies.

I take bubble baths.

I write in my journal.

I put flowers into vases.

I dally at the thrift store.

I say kind things to myself.

I take cute photos of my dog.

I find my cat and smoosh him.

I reconnect with friends and family.

I play.  Cards games and board games.

I don’t check email or Facebook messenger.

I light a candle, put on music, pour a glass of wine, and cook dinner.

I take care of household business. Cleaning. Appointments. Paying bills.

I return to work on Wednesday RENEWED and ready to serve.  Not every “weekend” or time of sabbath is this gorgeous, but most of them are.

How do you carve time for renewal in your life?
