Prayer Shawls for General Synod
There’s been a buzz about Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma – can you hear it? It’s more of a clicking sound at times and, at other times, a subtle bit of clacking. More than a few people of the United Church of Christ have begun making prayer shawls for General Synod 35, which is in Kansas City at the Convention Center this July 11-15. They will at the Community Care Space, which is available for participants who desire a quiet place to rest and refocus. While celebratory much of the time, with so much worship and church work, General Synod can be exhausting. Prayer shawls are soothing for the participants while they continue God’s work. The people who receive them greatly appreciate you!
There are no particular requirements except that it be purposed as a shawl. Rev. Merlyn Lawrence suggests 20” x 60” shawls, and shared about her prayer:
“As I knit, stitch by stitch, I prayed that the recipient of my shawl and your shawl, would indeed feel the love, the prayers, the embrace, the hugs, the comfort, the warmth of our Mothering God that all of us are enfolding into these beautiful shawls.”
For help with ideas for a prayer shawl, Merlyn and I suggest trying YouTube to find the video that fits you. There are many great ideas out there! Now, have you remembered to sign up for General Synod? We hope to see you there!
There are two options for delivering your shawls for General Synod recipients:
First, you can mail or deliver them to Plymouth Congregational Church, attn: Kim Manz, 925 Vermont St, Lawrence, KS 66044. For delivery concerns, contact me, at chaplainregan@gmail.com, and I will help or direct you to Kim.
Second, bring the shawl to General Synod. People at registration or near there will know how to direct you.
I can already hear the buzzing of clicking and clacking increase across the states as news reaches you about this genuinely appreciated gift.
Contact me (as able) with photos and numbers completed (including church), questions, or concerns in the email and text listed! Thank you.
