St. Paul UCC in Eudora, KS has started a new outreach called “Service Sundays.” We meet together on the last Sunday of the month for a short worship service of approximately 20 minutes and then all head out of the church doors to be in service to the Eudora community. Sunday September 30th was the first Service Sunday. We heard word from folks who coordinate the Eudora Food Pantry (which is hosted by our church) that there was a great need for baby formula, food and other baby needs. We took this need and brought in shopping carts filled with everything from formula to baby clothes and everything in between.
We set up tables at the main intersection in Eudora (we do not even have a streetlight in town but everyone knows the parking lot at the 4-way stop!). We set out all the beautiful baby items and advertised on the Eudora Facebook pages and at the food pantry that we would be there. We were all having fun being together and “Being the Church”!
We know that church is not solely in our beautiful sanctuary, but out on the streets where people need help. We gave away almost everything, met lots of new folks and heard from 5 different people that they were actively seeking a church home! We heard back from folks that it was such a blessing to them — but in truth the greatest blessing was for all of us. We even heard from a man that used to live next door to the church and now lives in New England. He is 97 years old and told us that “St. Paul was a great place to be when I was a little boy and by the looks of things you still are.”
Our hearts are full and we can’t wait for the October Service Sunday! For that we are offering lawn service, raking leaves and such, to folks who are elderly or otherwise disabled here in town. At St. Paul we are committed to Be the Church and to step out boldly as a beacon of peace, hope, love, openness and light to the world. #3greatloves #loveofchildren #loveofneighbor
